MLB match-up Monday: Boston Red Sox at Texas Rangers

Two of the best teams in baseball start a 4-game series tonight, as the Boston Red Sox (77-49) take on the Texas Rangers (73-55) at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texas. There will be 7 games between these two potential playoff contenders over the next two weeks, and there’s no doubt that each game will make for a great opportunity for placing wagers at one of the best online sportsbooks reviewed here.

Boston comes into tonight’s match-up a half-game back of the New York Yankees in the AL East division, after falling out of first due to two consecutive series losses. Fresh off picking up 3 of 4 games at Kansas City though, the Red Sox will be looking to regain a tie for the lead in the AL East, with a win tonight (the Yankees are off until tomorrow’s series with Oakland).

Texas on the other has lost 2 games in a row heading into tonight’s series with Boston, but still stands at 7-3 in their last ten thanks to a previous 6-game winning streak. The Rangers were simply blown out (and shut out) by Gavin Floyd and the Chicago White Sox last night 10-0, so no doubt they’ll be looking to rebuild confidence against a Boston team they know they can beat, winning their last 10 games in 12 tries against the Red Sox in Texas.

The pitching match-up for tonight should be a good one. C.J. Wilson (12-5, 3.20 ERA) looks to have regained his form after a bit of a rough spell in late July, and has fared well against Boston over his career. He’s 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA in four starts against Boston, and comes into the game on two consecutive road wins (1.38 ERA over those two starts).

Wilson will face Erik Bedard (4-8, 3.44 ERA), who has not won in 7 starts, and is 0-1 in 3 starts since being acquired by Boston from the Seattle Mariners. However, that is not to say he hasn’t pitched well. Bedard has only allowed 5 runs in his 3 starts with Boston, never giving up more than 3 runs in a single game. He’ll need some help to break his unlucky streak with the Red Sox this year, as well as against the Rangers (winless in his last 7 starts against the Rangers). So he’s not won in 7 games all together, not won in his last 7 games against the Rangers…does something have to give here tonight?

Betting lines at sportsbook for Texas vs. Boston:

With Texas getting -151 odds to win, clearly odds makers aren’t buying much of a chance that Erik Bedard overcomes C.J. Wilson to end his current winning drought. Boston is a +131 underdog to win, so for those who look for Texas to continue slumping at the plate (they’ve dropped their last 3 of 4 while hitting .194 with only 10 runs scored in those 4 games), this may just be a good pick for you.

The over/under stands at 8.5 runs, with EVEN money on the under bet, -120 money on the over. Texas gives up 1.5 runs at +145 odds, while Boston gets 1.5 runs at -165 odds.

Our Pick to Win:

C.J. Wilson has been pitching well, and Erik Bedard has had his struggles against Texas this year, and over his career. The Rangers bats however are the question mark for this match-up, as playing in their hitter-friendly ballpark, they’ll need to step up and provide some offense to match the scoring capabilities of Boston. I like the underdog pick with Boston to win at +131 odds, and look for Bedard to step up, get some run support, and get the monkey off his back with his first win for Boston tonight.
