Bowl Preview

We’re on the doorstep of the BCS National Championship game, but before we enjoy the fun at the Big Dance, we have one more bowl game to take care of and that’s the Bowl today.

Bettors will get a look at the 11-2 No. 25 ranked Kent State Golden Flashes and the 9-3 Arkansas State Red Wolves in this one. These may be two teams we haven’t seen much from this season, but it should be an entertaining game, as both squads come into the game averaging more than 34 points per contest.

Kent State will attack Ark State on the ground

Both offenses are strong, but they go about their business in very different ways. Kent State did almost all of its damage on the ground, averaging 228.3 yards per game (17th in FBS), while the Red Wolves produced a balanced attack, throwing for 264.4 yards (41st) and rushing for 217.4 (21st) per game.

The defenses also stack up fairly evenly, as both teams allowed approximately 25 points per game this season. Although the Flashes defense did get scorched last week in the team’s first loss in 11 games, as they fell to 44-37 in two overtimes to Northern Illinois. Meanwhile, the Wolves are coming off a shutout performance against Mid Tennessee and have held every opponent but one under 30 points during their current seven-game winning streak.

The Golden Flashes are making just their third-ever bowl appearance, with the other two coming in 1972 and 1954, so the inexperience in big games also might be a problem for them today.

Look for Ark State's experience and balanced offense to be enough to get the win today

On paper, it looks like the Wolves have the advantage and they do on the betting line as well as a three-point favorite. As long as they can limit the running game of Kent State, the Wolves should have no problem scoring points and controlling the game, which I think they will do. Look for Arkansas State to get the win today and cover -3 in the process.
