Wednesday Betting Tips: College Hoops

#24 Colorado State's game against San Diego State could well be Wednesday night's sleeper game, and not just because tip-off is 10:00 PM ET.

Rivalry Week got off to a banging start on Monday with #14 Kansas thrashing #10 Kansas State, snapping a three-game losing skid in the process. Then, Tuesday saw #8 Michigan State embarrass #4 Michigan to the tune of 75-52, a result that means the Spartans won’t be flying under the radar for much longer while the sheen has well and truly been lifted off the Wolverines. On the same evening #25 Kentucky fell to #7 Florida, a defeat that could see the Wildcats exit the AP poll again next Monday.

The excitement continues on Wednesday with a schedule that features the top three teams in the AP poll in action. Casino Review has scoured the fixtures and picked out three games that should be very interesting, and no, #1 Indiana isn’t one of our picks (we predict the Hoosiers will make light work of Nebraska in Bloomington).Read on for your Wednesday betting tips.

#3 Miami (FL) @ Florida State

7:00 PM ET

The current talk of the nation, #3 Miami (19-3, 10-0 ACC) will look to remain unbeaten in conference play Wednesday as the side travels to Florida State (13-10, 5-5 ACC). Based on this season’s form, this looks like a slam dunk for the Hurricanes but Jim Larranaga’s side will need to be on upset alert.

Whilst the Seminoles have hardly been a blip on the radar of most college basketball fans this season, the side does have pedigree when it comes to playing the Hurricanes. Florida State has gone 17-9 since 1979-80 against Miami, including two wins from three last season (see below).  Despite being 6-6 at home this year, you know the Seminoles will be gunning for a spot of revenge after an embarrassing loss earlier this year.

On paper, Miami has the better offense and defense, and will look to ride these to a ninth straight road win. The Hurricanes have lost just once in true road games this season, and that came at Florida Gulf Coast on Nov. 13, the side’s first trip away from home.

This Season: Miami defeated Florida State 71-47 in Coral Gables on Jan. 27.

Last Season: Both sides won on its home court during the regular season, while Florida State picked up an 82-71 victory in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament.

Favorite: Miami Spread: 5 Total: 126½

Take: MIAMI – The Hurricanes will need to be careful in this one, but ultimately the side should get out of the game with a ‘W’. Take Miami (14-4-1 ATS) to cover the spread also, something the side has done well on the road (5-2-1 ATS) this season. With Miami (4-12-1) favoring the under and Florida State (10-10-0) splitting even between the over and under, take the total to go under.

North Carolina @ #2 Duke

9:00 PM ET

Undoubtedly the crown jewel of Wednesday’s schedule will be the Tar Heels’ trip to Durham. While North Carolina is having a tough time of it this season, this still promises to be one heck of a game.

North Carolina (16-7, 6-4 ACC) came up (very) short against Miami on Saturday and another loss tonight could potentially see the Tar Heels drop to sixth in the ACC. This is a school not used to such depths.

#2 Duke (21-2, 8-2 ACC) meanwhile won a fifth straight game on Saturday, and a sixth from seven. Unfortunately for the Blue Devils, squeaking by Boston College 62-61 wasn’t enough to regain the top spot in the AP polls. Or perhaps that should be fortunately with the way #1 sides have been faring over the past six weeks or so.

The two sides will renew one of college basketball’s best rivalries Wednesday night, a rivalry that has gone 41-39 in favor of North Carolina since 1979-80.

This Season: This will be the first meeting between the schools this season. The two will meet again in Chapel Hill on Mar. 9.

Last Season: UNC defeated Duke 88-70 in Durham last season, while Duke won 85-84 at North Carolina.

Favorite: Duke Spread: 10½ Total: 152

Take: DUKE – It proved prudent to stay away from North Carolina on Saturday’s lines and it will do so again on Wednesday night. Despite the Tar Heels being a solid offensive side, they’ll come up short against the Blue Devils. However, Duke (13-10-0 ATS) has not been great against the spread and 10 points is a fairly big number – at least in terms of this rivalry – so take UNC (12-9-0 ATS) to cover the spread. With both teams able to put points on the board, take the total to go over.

San Diego State @ #24 Colorado State

10:00 PM ET

If you’ve not followed the Mountain West Conference this season, our final inclusion on today’s betting list might come as a bit of a surprise. Trust us; it shouldn’t.

The MWC might not be the most grandiose of conferences but there’s a real three-way dance emerging for the top spot (and those AP rankings) between #19 New Mexico, #24 Colorado State and unranked San Diego State. In fact, it wouldn’t be a stretch to add UNLV to that list.

San Diego State (18-5, 6-3 MWC) and #24 Colorado State (19-4, 6-2 MWC) meet tonight in Fort Collins, Colo.

The Rams have won four straight games and six of the last seven. In his first season in charge, Larry Eustachy has seen his side go a perfect 13-0 at home, a number that strengthens the team’s status as favorite.

Meanwhile, the Aztecs have won two straight and four of the last five. A win on Wednesday night would see the side tie Colorado State with 34 wins in the head-to-head series. It would also complete a season sweep of the Rams.

This Season: San Diego State scored a 79-72 overtime victory over Colorado State on Jan. 12.

Last Season: Both schools won on their home court during the regular season, while San Diego State took a 79-69 victory in the semifinals of the MWC tournament.

Favorite: Colorado State Spread: 5 Total: 128

Take: SAN DIEGO STATE – On the court there’s little to differentiate the two sides, but this season the MWC has been particularly competitive at the top of the table with no team able to gain a decisive advantage. An Aztecs win would be in keeping with that trend. In the unlikely event that Fresno State defeats New Mexico, it would also mean a return to the top of the standings. Although Colorado State (5-10-0) has had thing for the under this season, take the 128 total to go over, something the Aztecs (9-6-2) have seen often.
