Quick Hits on Today’s NCAA Action

Florida Gulf Coast pulled the upset of the tourney so far in knocking off Georgetown.

Stop me if you’ve heard this over the last 48 hours; “How’s your bracket looking?” There’s a good chance you’re among many that can say that your bracket is still in pretty good shape despite losses by New Mexico, Pittsburgh and UNLV. Although I am aware of a few people who tempted fate and put the Steve Alford-led Lobos into the Final Four, most people had their Final Four intact entering Friday’s action. See update below…

Georgetown was upset by Florida Gulf Coast… Minnesota beat UCLA by 20… K-State was upset by LaSalle… Iowa State, San Diego State both win going away… Ole Miss upsets Wisconsin… Florida pours it on in the second half… OSU, Illinois give Big Ten wins

If you’ve got a hankering for some of today’s action then I’m going to do my best to break down the games and give you some insight on just where to throw your hard-earned cash.

5 VCU vs 4 Michigan – I’ll be honest. I’ve had VCU winning this game since last Sunday night for two reasons. First, Michigan does not defend well and secondly, they rely too much offensively on Trey Burke and the three. The Wolverines answered both of those issues against South Dakota State, but the Rams are not the Jackrabbits. I still like the athletic VCU to win.

6 Memphis vs 3 Michigan State – MSU started slow against Valpo, but they turned up the defensive heat and blew out the Crusaders. Memphis’ win by two over St. Mary’s was a little closer than most expected. The Tigers are athletic, but the level of competition this year will cost them against the physical Spartans.

Tommy Amaker
I believe the road ends for Amaker and the Crimson against Arizona today.

8 Colorado State vs 1 Louisville – The Cards need to be very careful here. CSU hits the boards like men (4th nationally) and especially on the defensive end. Louisville cannot rely on their skill and athleticism only. Look for Peyton Siva and Russ Smith to dictate the action with some drive and kick-outs. I like the Cards but I don’t see it being a blowout.

14 Harvard vs 6 Arizona – The Crimson have been a great story but Arizona is much more athletic than New Mexico in my opinion and this will ultimately be the end for Harvard. I had the Wildcats losing to Belmont, but they proved to me they were ready to play and looked aggressive. Take ‘Zona.

12 Oregon vs 4 St. Louis – Were you really that surprised the Ducks beat Oklahoma State? The 12-seed was a complete slap in the face to the Pac-12 Champs and it motivated them to victory. Oregon will have an advantage in rebounding, but the Billikens played a much tougher schedule and play tremendous defense. Take St. Louis to win.

6 Butler vs 3 Marquette – Is anyone luckier than the Golden Eagles? I had Davidson into the Sweet 16 and had they not gone brain dead in the final seconds….  This will be an absolute battle and I like the shooting and toughness Butler to get this win.

9 Wichita State vs 1 Gonzaga – Here’s the problem… Was Pitt as good as people thought or was WSU that good themselves? Personally I think the Shockers are pretty tough. They beat a Big East team by playing Big East basketball and I didn’t like how Gonzaga looked against an athletic Southern team. Down goes the first #1!

12 California vs 4 Syracuse – Don’t assume that the ‘Cuse is hot because they torched a pretty bad Montana team. Cal will challenge the zone and will give Orange a much better game than the Grizzlies did that’s for sure. With that said, I still like Boeheim and company to take care of business out West.
