I can tell you first hand they play some pretty good football in the Mid-American Conference. Last year’s champ Northern Illinois advanced to the Orange Bowl while several other teams went bowling. Tonight and tomorrow night there are a total of four games and each offers some betting action.
Ohio +9 at Bowling Green – The Bobcats entered the 2013 season with hopes of a Mid-American Conference Championship but at 6-3 that isn’t going to happen. Ohio comes off an embarrassing 30-3 loss to Buffalo where little, if anything, worked.
Bowling Green comes in also at 6-3 but at 4-1 in the MAC East whereas Ohio is 3-2. Should the Falcons get past Ohio and then Eastern Michigan, a season finale showdown at Buffalo would decide the East winner.
BG has one of the stingiest defenses in college football. They are seventh in the country and are giving up just over 16 points per game. Ohio is 2-6 against the spread in their last eight games at Bowling Green. I like the Falcons to cover at home.
Buffalo +3.5 at Toledo – The MAC East leading Bulls travel to the Glass Bowl to take on West foe Toledo. The Rockets are 6-3 overall and 4-1 in their division but are looking up at Ball State and Northern Illinois who have not lost in conference play.
The Rockets are 15th in the nation in rushing with over 236 yards per game. For Buffalo, the scenario is simple. They need to win tonight, defeat winless Miami and then face Bowling Green for a shot at the MAC Championship Game.
Both Buffalo and Toledo are still in the thick of the race for a bowl game and losses now would cripple those hopes. The Rockets are 5-0 straight up in their last five home games and I like them to win tonight and cover.
Ball State +6.5 at Northern Illinois – The two best teams in the Mid-American Conference do battle Wednesday night in DeKalb, Illinois with the MAC West title on the line. Ball State is 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the conference while NIU is 9-0 and 5-0 in conference play.
The Huskies are in the top ten in both rushing (4th) and scoring (8th) and are led by do-everything QB Jordan Lynch. The Cardinals will have to rely on their 80th-ranked rush defense to contain Lynch and the Huskies while offensively they throw the ball for over 320 yards per game.
NIU is 2-4 against the spread in their last six games at home against Ball State which tells me this could be a close, high-scoring affair. The Huskies have big game experience and will pull away late to cover.
Miami, Ohio +16.5 at Kent State – The other Wednesday night MAC match-up features two teams with a combined record of 2-17. The Golden Flashes own both of those wins by the way. Regardless, Kent State is 115th in the nation in scoring at right around 18 points per game.
Not to be outdone, the Red Hawks score a measly 10 points per game good for 126th in the country. This game will boil down to turnovers and who can take advantage of them. The over/under is 46.5 and I love the under with these two offensive challenged teams.
The Red Hawks are 1-6-1 against the spread in their last eight road games while the Golden Flashes are 0-5 against the spread in their last five home games. I see Kent State winning but they won’t cover. 16.5 is too big of a number for teams that struggle to score.
